Rick Riordan Who??
When I first learned we had to create our own myths, I was honestly a bit unsure as to how I could pull it off. I have grown up loving all sorts of religious and mythological stories -- I find them fascinating, and their effects on humans throughout the centuries is absolutely amazing to dissect. Actually creating my own, though, was such a different experience from reading ones that have already been written by ancient peoples. I feel as though it is one thing to break down and analyze a myth to learn about a group of people and to put together the pieces of how it benefits their day to day life, and another to have to sit and think about your own sort of story to explain a common object or occurrence. That being said, I feel as though I am even more prepared to peruse myths from different time periods all over the world. Having to build your own mythological account from scratch really provides a new perspective on the creativity of our ancestors, and I think it has greatly benefitted the way I will approach researching new myths going forward.
Hi Hallie,
ReplyDeleteI really relate to what you said about feeling unsure at first, because I felt the same way going into this assignment. It’s so different reading myths and breaking them down versus actually trying to create one yourself. I also agree that writing a myth makes you realize how intentional everything has to be like the symbols, the message, and even the characters’ motivations. What stood out to me in your response is how you mentioned gaining a new appreciation for ancient storytellers, because I felt that too. It’s easy to admire myths from the outside, but creating one really shows how much thought and creativity goes into making a story feel meaningful and lasting.
I also agree with the idea on how important it would be for kids to create their own stories and myths as it would expand their ideas, beliefs, and morals on paper. I think it’s a really effective way to get students to think critically while also being creative. It makes writing feel more personal and engaging instead of just another assignment.

Hey Hallie,
ReplyDeleteI, too, was unsure of how creating my own myth would go. I'm quite unfamiliar with creative writing and wasn't sure how to approach it. But, like you, having general knowledge from studying myths was a great place to start. Having the knowledge definitely equipped us with the major components of myths and what myths entail. I really loved how you said it was fascinating to learn about myths because it showed us the creativity of our ancestors, and that is so true. Our ancestors were incredibly intelligent! It is unfortunate how, with the rise of AI, it may potentially take it all away. I agree that this experience of studying myths to creatively making one is something we can definitely share with our future students, as it was quite fun! I think before doing the creative writing process it is important to first learn about them, as doing so will empower students and make them more confident when it comes to building their own myth.
Sincerely,
Natalie Ramirez
